Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Police Department recently completed a speeding high visibility enforcement campaign conducted July thanks to funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
The initiative, which ran from July 14-31, was supported by an $8,800 mini-grant that covered 120 hours of officer overtime dedicated to targeted traffic enforcement. During the 18-day enforcement period, GIPD officers conducted 1,529 traffic stops. Of those, 416 drivers were contacted for speeding, including 22 traveling 16 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit. In total, officers issued 844 warnings, 549 citations and made 281 enforcement-related arrests or violations.
Speeding continues to be a serious safety concern in both Grand Island and across Nebraska. Over the past five years, the number of speeding incidents has risen significantly, contributing to preventable crashes—some with tragic outcomes. The Grand Island Police Department urges all motorists to slow down, obey posted speed limits and always wear a seatbelt.
