Getting Started in the Shooting Sports
Forty million Americans enjoy the shooting sports annually. But for newcomers the biggest challenge is not knowing how to get started. In fact, our research shows 48,000,000 men and women are interested in shooting and are simply waiting for an invitation.
Getting the right introduction can ensure a quality experience and a lifetime of enjoyment. For many participants this introduction comes from friends, family members and acquaintances. For others the first step is to find a shooting range that offers introductory courses and quality instruction.
That's why HPSP offers the "First Shots" program to give new shooters their first introduction to firearms. Our program is taught by certified shooting instructors, who will give you the time you need to take your First Shots at Heartland Public Shooting Park.
Here are some answers to common questions regarding First Shots:
What is a “First Shots Seminar”?
First Shots is an educational program from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) that allows local shooting ranges like Heartland Public Shooting Park (HPSP) to partner with the NSSF in offering local opportunities for individuals to learn more about firearms and firearm ownership. At a First Shots seminar, you will get:
• An educational introduction to the safe, recreational use of handguns, rifles and shotguns.
• A clear understanding of the local requirements for owning and purchasing a handgun, rifle and shotgun.
• Individual and group training and shooting range access for continued participation.
• Shooting sports opportunities for all levels of interest.
If you’ve ever thought about getting involved in shooting but just didn’t know where to even begin, then this is the class you have to take. This program is designed and limited for true novices-curious about the experience of firing and owning a gun.
How much does it cost?
It’s a free class where you’ll learn all you need to know about the rules and regulations governing ownership, how to safely handle firearms and you’ll also get professional training as you take your First Shots at HPSP.
When will First Shots be offered?
HPSP will be offering First Shot seminars throughout the year. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for our latest class schedule and information about our classes.
What can I expect at a First Shots seminar?
Our First Shots program is centered on giving the beginning shooter a safe and well-rounded overview of using a firearm for recreational purposes. This class is approximately two hours long and includes classroom time and range time. During our classroom period, we will discuss basic firearm safety, how ammunition and guns work, how to hold a rifle or handgun and how to use the sights on a gun to accurately shoot at a target. During our range segment, you will have the opportunity to shoot both a .22 rimfire rifle and handgun while one of our instructors coaches you in the basic skills of shooting.
